Staycation 2012: Washington, DC

by Lauryn on September 13, 2012 in Personal

Hi friends!! You may have been wondering where I have been the past few days, or you may have not even noticed…either is okay :-) But!  I have been somewhere: Staycation.  Jared and I love Staycations.  We are generally homebodies who like routine and like our own bed even more so these “cations” are some of the best for us.  This year we decided to take two day trips, and one turned into an overnight stay.  First up: Washington DC.

We took the train!  Crossing that off my 25 list!

Union Station was so beautiful!  Made me wish I could have been around in the early 1940′s to see it at its busiest!

We went to the Library of Congress and saw a bunch of unique exhibits.  My favorites were Books that Shaped America exhibit and Exploring the Early Americas.  It was so interesting thinking about which books have changed our history as a nation, and it was also amazing to see some of the earliest maps of America recorded.  Some of them made me giggle because we have access to so much more information now through satellites.  Clearly they were on the forefront of mapmaking and its astonishing that they figured out what they did, so I am in no place to judge, but still… some of it seemed so out there!

We went to the Botanical Gardens.  I never saw a single bug.  Isn’t that strange??

We tried to get someone to take our picture….

Then we took a cab to Georgetown and of course we had to get a cupcake!

I had the Key Lime, and Jared had the Republican Red Velvet.  He was going to get the regular Red Velvet, but they had these as well and we thought it was funny.

We shopped some of the home decor stores.  CB2 was my favorite.  Oh goodness I could have spent thousands there.  We knew there was huge storm headed our way so we ran to a restaurant I had seen on the way in.  It happened to be Serendipity 3, home of the Guiness World Record Holder for Most Expensive Sundae.  They call it the Opulent Sundae. Its topped with Caviar… very curious.

I could have taken a lot more pictures, but I really tried to just enjoy myself.  Jared and I rarely take vacations alone (friend vacations are our favorite), so I wanted to really focus on him for the most part. We took the train home and we were completely bored out of our minds.  I never thought to bring a book or crossword puzzle or anything.  I just thought Jared and I would keep each other entertained on the way home, even though we’d been up since 5:30 AM and spent the whole day walking around in the sun.  Why dont trains have movies playing like buses and planes do?

I should also tell you my very favorite thing to do in DC is to scout out snipers and wave wildly at them until I know they have seen me.  They obviously dont wave back, but I laugh the whole time and its awesome.  I also waved when I saw 3 blacked out suburbans drive by.  One day I am going to get tackled to the ground, dont you think?

It was such a fun day!! DC has so much to offer and I know we will be back soon!

hahahaha i’ve lived in nova my whole life and never thought to scout snipers!! sounds like such a fun trip!!! I admire your staycations – my idea is go big or stay home. it’s encouraging to know that I can still have a fun, “take me out of my environment” and still get to sleep in MY bed-cation.
