Creating a website: part 1

by Lauryn on July 26, 2011 in Business

phew!! it has been a busy, crazy, insane, mind blowing couple of days for me!  this is the first time in my business where I feel…. behind.  I am behind on blogging, editing, mailings, fixing my tax paperwork, updating booked clients workflow, and a million other little things.  but, I want to at least start talking about how we came to the website we did.

I knew it was time for a website many months ago.  it has been on my goal list for this year since january.  and the first step is finding someone who you like, trust, and admire to design your site.  I say like, because you are going to be talking with them a lot.  it helps to like them.  I say trust, because a website is a crucial piece of your business and you are putting the design in someone else’s hand.  and I say admire, because just like with photographer’s you should book them on what you have seen them do, not asking them to design in a different way. You dont ask your photographer to shoot or edit a certain way.  You book them based on the fact that you like what they shoot already.  Same thing with a designer.  And to throw a wrench in the plan, I am not lousy with cash.  So the designer also had to be in my price range.  Oh, and one more thing… I wanted a showit site. So I needed a designer who knew that program.

Let’s just say this….is wasn’t easy.  I looked at designers for months.  And finally in April I found Jennifer Olmstead with Deleted Space Creative. Yep, we have been talking back and forth for 4 months.  Website design, I have learned, takes time.  It will take several posts for me to describe how thankful I am for Jen.  She was the perfect designer for me and what I had envisioned.  I love her and she rocked it.

I had just one image to show Jen when we started…

I saw that image and instantly, my heart said to my head….there is your website.  Now, you may be looking at that, and then looking at the website and scratching your head.  But I see the symmetry and closeness between the two.  Perhaps you do as well?

So I took a questionnaire Jen had sent me, attached the image to it, and emailed it to her.  Then the work began.  The first thing she had me do was to put together a pinterest board with more inspiration images.  You can see that, here. I wanted more color, a box like map thing, lots of different type, hilarious and sarcastic commentary, casualness, happy, light, and airy.

And then came the waiting game on my part.  This is where the trust comes in.  I had to let Jen take the reins and wait for her to show me mock ups.  I was given homework and things, like setting up the domain, writing out the verbiage for each page, gathering images, etc… But it was still so nerve wracking/exciting to wait for designs to start rolling in….

And we will pick up the next creating a website post right there!

There won’t be handmade weddings this week, and possibly not next week.   I have no excuse other than this is the busy season, I am not full time (yet!) and I am behind!  Thank you for being gracious with me.  I appreciate it!
